POOL SEASON IS ALMOST HERE. Here’s some timely advice from the pros at AQUA PROS
Opening: Mesh Covered pools should be open by April 15th. Its been warm for awhile and you could have an algae infestation ready to bloom in your pool. Waiting to open until later could be disastrous. Many believe that opening after pollen falls is a good idea. When pollen is in the air, its probably already too late to open without a serious algae bloom, or worse yet, a Chlorine demand. Chlorine demand is brought on by high concentrations of organic contaminant, biofilm, and other contaminants present in the pool water that exceeds the ability of a regular shock treatment to completely oxidize it. As you get this newsletter, it would be wise to look through your mesh cover or pull it back to look for algae growth. This can be easily done at night if the pool has a functioning underwater light. But remember, just because you don’t see it now, doesn’t mean its not ready to grow.
Solid Covered Pools may remain covered later without problems as long as they were in good condition at closing. A pool closed with a problem will only be worse this spring. I used to use the water on top of my solid covered pool as fill water however, I opened early in April. I also kept debris off the cover over the off-season. This practice gave me a cleaner cover to put away too.

Sand Filters: Filter sand should be changed every 3-5 years (annually on a Biguanide pool). Save on labor of sand change at opening. You did clean your filter sand at closing last fall, didn’t you?

Cartridge Filters: If your cartridge filter is over two years old or, it is not white in appearance, its probably in need of replacing. Again, if it was not cleaned last fall, degrease with Strip Kwik and Klean It. Always have an extra cartridge (or set) on hand for when you clean it/them. Cartridge filters must be allowed to dry after they’ve been chemically cleaned.
D.E. Filters: Always degrease any filter before cleaning scale or any mineral deposits.
