Vinyl Liners: 4 Factors That Affect Their Life

Vinyl Quality
The first thing that affects the life of a swimming pool’s vinyl liner is the quality of the material to begin with.  Today’s vinyl may contain various products that can give them maximum life if the manufacturer chooses to include them in the manufacturing process.
Begin with 100% Virgin Vinyl( not reground) material.  Not all vinyl manufacturers use 100% Virgin Vinyl and since 100% Virgin Vinyl will last much longer under the same circumstances don’t settle for less.
Ultraviolet light inhibitor is an essential product to prevent Uv degradation in intense sunlight often found in a swimming pool’s location.
Microbial Retardants are added to the best vinyl in order to prevent possible staining from occurring in the presence of certain bacteria in the ground.  Some bacteria can produce causing secretions that will permanently stain liners in the area.  Such areas include those near drainfields.
Because vinyl liners in swimming pools are exposed to the elements year around, its important to have Climate Stabilizer impregnated into the vinyl.

How is the vinyl made into a liner?
Typical vinyl liners are made “close” to the dimensions of the pool in best case.  The longest lasting liners are what I call “PRECISION FIT”.  A precision fit liner is made to precisely fit the dimensions of the pool without any stretch.  Because stretching vinyl is harmful to its life, a liner made precisely  for the pool under construction will have the longest lasting durability.

How Well the Liner is Installed
For longest term use and durability, a liner should be installed with little or no stretch.  The installers should be experienced and diligent to see that the liner is installed according to the dimensions it was manufactured.  Improper installation of even a Precision fit liner will have bad results and cause the life of a liner to be shortened.

Chemical Care of the Pool
The last and equally important factor in the life of how a vinyl swimming pool liner lasts is in the hands of the consumer or maintenance person.  Pool water chemistry influences many factors in the pool environment, including liner life.  Its absolutely essential to maintain the pool water in the proper chemical parameters outlined by the vinyl manufacturer for the life of the liner.  In addition to having your pool’s water professionally tested at opening and closing, Its essential to have your pool water professionally tested at least monthly after the season begins.   If possible, have your water tested by a pool professional bi-weekly or after heavy rainfall, significant water addition, or heavy bather load.

A professionally staffed pool store , especially a BioGuard dealer is fully equipped to not only perform a thorough test of your pool water, but they’re also able to provide you with the instruction to take best care of your swimming pool investment.

Aqua Pros Pools & Spas is Central Virginia’s authorized BioGuard Dealer since 1986
